
About Us
The Sumter County Historical Society (SCHS) is located in Livingston, AL, which is in the heart of Sumter County. Its headquarters is located at the Spence-Moon House. SCHS is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization and membership open to anyone who has an interest in Sumter County. We have members throughout the United States and welcome those who join us in the effort to study and preserve our local history.
The Sumter County Historical Society's mission is devoted to discovering, preserving, and diffusing whatever may relate to the natural, civil, literary, cultural, architectural, economic, ecclesiastical and political history of Sumter County, Alabama. It also promotes the historic preservation of sites, structures, articles, and other memorabilia of historical interests. Furthermore, the SCHS furnishes facilities as well as render services and financial support to the local museum currently under development. SCHS also receives and administers funds and properties of all kinds for the sole purpose of preserving the history of Sumter County, Alabama. It seeks to print, edit, publish, and sell books, magazine, pictures, paintings, sketches, drawings, and slides for the purpose of reaching out and sharing our local history with all of those that share the same interests.
